Synopsis:

This story is of a nineteen-year-old woman named Vivian Morris, who is sent to live with her aunt in New York City. Having lived her whole life in the UK, she finds herself alone in a city known for its glitz and glamour but soon enough starts relishing the freedom it brings with it. However, her life in New York during the 1940s isn’t easy sailing but is filled with storms threatening to tear her apart.

Review:

This book straightaway transports you to the bustling, noisy streets of 1940s New York City. The vivid descriptions of the city throughout the book are bound to make you fall in love with the city.

The protagonist, Vivian Morris, truly depicts the life of a woman struggling to do away with the shackels society has bound her in. However, that doesn’t stop her from enjoying the freedom and the world around her. Vivian isn’t perfect. She is far from perfect, which is exactly what makes her admirable. It is empowering to read about a woman who takes the reins of her life while being unapologetic and true to herself. The female friendships, the scandalous relationships and her relationship with her brother further add to the book's appeal. Mixed with the allure of the entertainment industry, this book is worth binge-reading(no idea if that's a word🙈).

The reason I didn’t give this book a 5-star rating is due to the latter half of the book. Personally, I expected a little more from the ending, owing to the way the story played out, but I nevertheless truly enjoyed this book. If you love reading books set in wartime or are intrigued by what happens behind the glittery curtains of the entertainment and theatre industry. Do give it a read!
